Join us in our second edition of She Moves Mountains, where we spend a week in the beautiful community of Avani in Berinag, Uttarakhand. Avani is an organisation that has been working in the region for the last 20+ years on various skilling, livelihood and community development interventions. Their primary focus is on sustainably harvested and produced natural dyes, textiles and garments. We will interact with artisans, weavers and farmers, learn how plant-based natural dyes are made, spend time understanding their business and journey and see how we can add value to their eco-system. If we're lucky and the weather Gods are kind, we will also be in time for the indigo harvest :)
She Moves Mountains is a unique travel experience, where we bring together women from the cities and women from the mountains. We engage and learn from each other, share stories of personal challenges and successes, find similarities despite our vast differences and leave a tiny, but everlasting impact on the community. The cost of the workshop is Rs 25000. This includes everything once we reach the village - our stay, meals, workshops sessions and local activities. Travel to and from the village is additional, as are personal expenses of any kind.
Avani focuses on capacity building in rural communities, and on creating opportunities for women and families to make sustainable contributions to their villages. We are devoted to generating income for local people using only local skills and local, environmentally friendly materials. Our primary focus is on sustainably harvested and produced tints, dyes, textiles and garments. Today, Avani includes a network of nearly 800 artisans and farmers who work together to grow, process, design and create products that generate income for local residents. Products range from raw natural colorants for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals to eco-friendly art supplies for children to textile printing and dyeing. Each product line is part of a high quality industry on track to scale and compete in international markets.
Avani is situated in a place called Tripuradevi, near Berinag in Uttarakhand. We will take an overnight bus from Delhi to Haldwani, followed by a 10-12 hour road journey to the beautiful campus of Avani. We will travel in a shared cab from Haldwani to Avani.
The campus is situated in a tiny, scenic village in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. We will also visit one of their field centres in the surrounding villages for a couple of days. Our days will involve workshop sessions and activities, but the evenings will be free for leisure, small walks and most all of all, that much needed peace and quiet.
